The line between reality and fantasy becomes blurry as the WOMAN becomes increasingly close to a doll, whom she treats as her own child. The MAN makes his best attempts to provide for his family but, over-exerts himself day in and day out for a company that could care less if he lives or dies. His all-consuming desire to fulfill his patriarchal duties creates a rift in their marital bond and even threatens his safety. by Christopher Durang Directed by Matthew Moore ABOUT THE SHOW Wanda’s Visit is a darkly comedic play that follows Jim and Marsha, a married couple stuck in routine after 13 years of marriage, as their lives are thrown into chaos by the arrival of Wanda, Jim’s eccentric and overly dramatic ex-girlfriend from High School. Wanda’s unfiltered behavior and chaotic energy disrupt the couple’s mundane life, forcing them to confront their own relationship’s cracks. A sharp and witty exploration of nostalgia, leading to a series of unexpected revelations about love and relationships. Character Descriptions Jim (Male, 30s-50s): A mild-mannered, traditional, and slightly repressed man. Jim is married to Marsha and is content with their predictable, suburban life—until Wanda's visit disrupts it. He tries to maintain control amidst the chaos but is easily overwhelmed. A subtle sense of humor and strong comedic timing are essential.
Marsha (Female, 30s-50s): Jim’s loyal and sensible wife, who is increasingly dissatisfied with their marriage but unwilling to admit it outright. Marsha is reserved but becomes progressively unhinged as Wanda stirs up tension. She has a quick wit and moments of vulnerability. Wanda (Female, 30s-50s): A larger-than-life, eccentric, and flamboyant woman who is Jim’s old high school girlfriend. Wanda’s energy is chaotic and overwhelming; she’s oblivious to social boundaries and thrives on drama. Requires excellent comedic timing and a knack for physical comedy. The Waiter (Any gender, 20s-50s): A supporting role that provides commentary during the restaurant scene. The Waiter is dry and unbothered by the chaos around them, offering opportunities for comedic delivery. |

ABOUT THE SHOW
"Picasso at the Lapin Agile" is a comedic play by Steve Martin set in a Parisian bar in 1904, where iconic figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein cross paths. The story unfolds in the whimsical atmosphere of the Lapin Agile, a lively cabaret frequented by artists and intellectuals. As they engage in witty banter, philosophical debates, and playful competitions, the two geniuses ponder the nature of creativity, fame, and the future. The play explores themes of artistic ambition, the clash of ideas, and the fleeting nature of genius, all while blending humor with thought-provoking dialogue. Throughout the evening, the characters grapple with their aspirations and the impact of their work, ultimately reflecting on the transformative power of art and science. The interplay between Picasso and Einstein serves as a metaphor for innovation and the unpredictable journey of creativity. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN Freddy+: Character age/presents as: 25-35 male presenting. Barkeep and Owner of the Lapin Agile. Lots of physicality. Onstage for almost the entire duration of the show. Must be comfortable with improv/ad-libbing and crowd work. When it comes to love, he is maybe a little more insecure than he thought, excels at his job, salt-of-the-earth, practical, occasionally, he is exceptionally wise Gaston: French accent: Character age/presents as: 50-65 male presenting. Constantly on and offstage. An older gentleman. As he is sure to remind you. Has to strike a balance between good-natured and cheeky, he cannot be too sweet but also cannot be completely disrespectful, think older George Clooney-esque schmaltzy energy (or at least that’s how he envisions himself). Germaine+: Character age/presents as: 25-35 female presenting. Onstage for almost the entire duration of the show. A waitress, girlfriend of Freddy, works at the Lapin Agile, think of a young Gertrude Stein. Sharp, witty, knows who she is and what she wants, self-assured, poised, dignified, smarter than anyone gives her credit for, bored, knows the power of her feminine wiles **Albert Einstein: Character age/presents as: 25 male presenting. jovial, understanding, patient, scholarly, brilliant, competitive (when provoked). Suzanne+: Character age/presents as 19, (seeking an actor 21+ as this role also doubles the Countess and A Female Admirer) female presenting. - Suzanne is a bright young woman. Endless potential. Perhaps a bit naive but quickly becoming less so. Flirty, charming, resolute, and savvier than she’s given credit for. - The Countess - Light German accent. Brainy, brilliant, bubbly, smarter than Einstein - A Female Admirer - silly, vain, chasing after a foolish charlatan, a diehard fan Sagot: Character age/presents as: 35-45 male presenting. He is Picasso’s art dealer, a smart businessman, brusque, direct, will occasionally indulge his more fun-loving side **Pablo Picasso+: Character age/presents as: 23 male presenting. larger than life, vibrant, egotistical, charming not sincere but not unlikeable, dynamic, compelling Charles Dabernow Schmendiman: Any Accent or no accent, perhaps he is American. Character Age/presents as: 23-43. Can be the same age as or a little older than Picasso and Einstein. Male Presenting. A charlatan, a wannabe, possesses a lot of unearned confidence and no real talent or skill to back it up **The Visitor - Southern drawl. Character age/presents as: 20-30 male presenting. Let’s just say he’s spent a night or two at the Heartbreak Hotel. He enters wearing blue suede shoes. A time traveler. Charming AND sincere, docile, demure, wise as he brings with him knowledge of the future. **it is important to note, for those interested in auditioning for Picasso, Einstein, or the Visitor, these characters do not have to be biographically accurate, let loose and have fun, looking for big personalities, bold choices, what’s more important is that in this absurdist comedy they represent the concepts of Art, Science, and Music respectively +Staged Intimacy - please note, the following roles call for stage intimacy in the form of kissing and embracing: Picasso, Germaine, Suzanne, and Freddy. We will be working with an intimacy coordinator when blocking those scenes. Do you play any instruments? If so, don’t be shy, let us know! Proficiency in musical instruments: a bonus but not at all required! |
All of our auditions are open to the community.
